Call for Papers: 50th Annual Meeting of Cheiron: The International Society for the History of Behavioral and Social Sciences

Papers, posters, symposia/panels, or workshops are invited for the 50th annual meeting of Cheiron: The International Society for the History of Behavioral and Social Sciences. The conference will be held at the University of Akron, in Akron, Ohio, with Cathy Faye as local host. The University of Akron is the home of the Cummings Center for the History of Psychology, home to the National Museum of Psychology and the Archives of the History of American Psychology.

The Akron-Canton Airport is about a 20-minute drive from campus.  Cleveland Hopkins International Airport is a 45-minute drive from campus. Dormitory accommodations will be available at a very affordable price, along with local hotel options. Further travel details will provided in the coming months.

Submissions may deal with any aspect of the history of the human, behavioral, and social sciences or related historiographical and methodological issues. For this year’s 50th meeting, we particularly encourage submissions that address changes in historiography in the behavioral and social sciences over the past half century. All submissions should conform to the guidelines listed below.

All submissions must be received by 5pm CST, January 15, 2018. Please email your proposals to the 2018 Program Chair, Robert Kugelmann, at kugelman@udallas.edu.

Encuentro conjunto de la ESHHS & CHEIRON

Poco antes del inicio de las vacaciones estivales se celebraba el congreso conjunto de la ESHHS (European Society for the History of the Human Sciences) y de la Cheiron (International Society for the History of Behavioural and Social Sciences), sociedades que cada cuatro años se reúnen, alternativamente, en uno u otro lado del Atlántico. Esta vez el encuentro ha tenido lugar en Barcelona, con un programa que ha sabido estar a la altura de los conocidos atractivos turísticos de la ciudad, y que ha logrado que nos desplazáramos cada día al campus de Bellaterra de la Universidad Autónoma de Barcelona (UAB), donde las sesiones tuvieron lugar. Quizá una de las primeras cuestiones a destacar sea esa: el volumen e interés del programa. Nada menos que tres mesas paralelas, distribuidas a lo largo de tres días y medio, que han podido generar alguna que otra dosis de frustración entre quienes veíamos coincidir intereses. Afortunadamente, nada que los amenos y caseros coffee breaks no hayan permitido arreglar.

La riqueza del encuentro, obviamente, fue mucho más allá de lo cuantitativo. En lo que a procedencia geográfica se refiere, más allá de los habituales colegas de EEUU y del largo y ancho de Europa, hemos podido disfrutar de una nutrida representación latinoamericana, con colegas de Brasil, Argentina o Chile, de Australia y hasta de Taiwan. En términos de contenido creo que hay que resaltar, y celebrar, la apertura de este encuentro a la historia de la ciencia en general y a la historia de las ciencias humanas, en particular. Se ha ido esta vez mucho más allá de la historia de la psicología, que ha venido ocupando, a pesar del nombre de las sociedades en cuestión, un lugar bastante preeminente. Sin duda ha jugado aquí un papel importante la figura de Annette Mülberger, principal encargada  de la organización del congreso, a la sazón actual directora del Centro de Historia de la Ciencia de la UAB (CEHIC). FIRST CALL FOR ABSTRACTS: ESHHS/CHEIRON

JOINT MEETING 

ESHHS (European Society for the History of Human Sciences) &

 CHEIRON (International Society for the History of Behavioral and Social Sciences)

 Barcelona, Spain, 27th of June to 1st of July, 2016

The Centre for History of Science (CEHIC) invites submissions to the  joint conference of ESHHS and CHEIRON to be held from the 27th of June to 1st of July, 2016 at the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona.

Sessions, papers, workshop, round-tables and posters may deal with any aspect of the history of the human, behavioral or social sciences. This year’s conference will devote particular interest to topics such as:

  • historiography of human sciences
  • history and philosophy of science
  • popularization of science and the role of experts in modern society
  • the circulation of science and technology in the European periphery

Submissions must be received by 15th of January, and must be sent electronically as attachment in MSWord (.doc / .docx) to the programme committee:

Please submit only original papers and indicate the submission type (session, paper, poster, workshop or round-table proposal). Any submission must include the name and the institutional address of the author.

Papers: send a 500-600 word abstract in English plus short bibliography. In case your communication will be in another language please inform the committee in order to assist in planning linguistic support, if necessary.

Posters: send a 300 word abstract.

Session, workhop or round-table: send a 500-600 word rationale of the event (plus short bibliography) as well as a short abstract for each paper or intervention.

Notification of acceptance will be sent by 29 of February, 2016. A limited number of travel stipends will be available to students or scholars who present papers or posters. Please indicate along with your submission if you wish to be considered for this arrangement.
